Where the Streets Have her Name is part history, part activism and part community action project. Launched on VRT (CANVAS) in 2020.
In Belgium, only 7% of streets, parks, bridges or even works of public art are named or created by women. Yet it is often they who have shaped the communities we live in. This programme champions women who are household names, unsung heroes, of feminist fighters, scientists, politicians and stay-at-home-mums who fought for their beliefs. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to identify remarkable women, to tell their stories and bring balance to the names we give to public spaces.
By the end of filming 141 public places were renamed. But new campaigns continued to spring up every week and 6 months later that total has grown to 170.
